Thank you to friend of the Foundation, April Coulson, for her amazing fundraising lunch held recently raising a phenomenal $156,000!
The event, called “Steps to a Cure Long Lunch” was held on the 19th October at Cloudlands at Brisbane and was attended by over 350 generous guests. It was an afternoon of delicious food, great drinks, special-guest entertainment, a raffle, live auction, and inspiring speakers.
April and her friends and family came together with a shared goal to support the Foundation and the human clinical trial. April bravely shared her story at the lunch and inspired the room with her beautiful and touching story telling.
We couldn’t do this important work without the support of our community – thank you!
April’s Story:
When April went to sleep on the 5th of June, 2020, she didn’t know that her life would drastically change overnight, from being a normal nineteen year old girl, to becoming a paraplegic, completely paralysed from her armpits down, unable to move or feel. It was an undiagnosable, spontaneous compression of April’s spinal cord at T1 level that caused her paraplegia. After being rushed to hospital, she spent ten days in ICU, followed by another five months in hospital. No doctor could explain what had happened to April, only knowing that it had not only affected her spinal cord, but every aspect of her physical health, leaving her extremely sick and weak.
While April continues to do rehabilitation daily, and lives every day to the fullest, her dream of being able to walk again has not yet been achieved. It is by supporting the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation and helping them succeed in a treatment to end paralysis for all, that April and so many others, would finally be able to receive the gift of walking.
